The Musics, July 2022

Below is what I’ve been tracking, listening to, and reading the last month. I have an email capture at the bottom if you want me to email when I post–usually once a month.

Legal blog:

In addition to this art blog, I day-job as a personal injury trial lawyer at Casey Gerry with a focus on brain injury cases. I blog on our firm website and my recent blogs are:

Shows:

New shows are in bold.
  • 7/1/22, San Diego Symphony playing Black Panther live, The Radys Shell (tonight!)
  • 7/7/22, Lettuce, then Tower of Power at The Rady Shell
  • 7/30/22, Les Claypool’s B*stard Jazz at Pappy & Harriet’s. Les formed this band with drummer Stanton Moore and this would be interesting to see these styles collide.
  • 8/14/22, Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Theauxdown (with Tank and the Bangas, Dumpstaphunk, and other NOLA groups), at The Rady Shell
  • 8/16/22, Tedeschi Trucks at SDSU Cal Coast Open Air Theatre
  • 8/23/22, Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote at The Rady Shell
  • 9/6/22, Kendrick Lamar, SDSU Viejas Arena
  • 9/9/22, Alicia Keys at SDSU Cal Coast Open Air Theatre
  • 9/16/22, Weird Al at Pechanga Temecula
  • 9/17/22, Wilco at SDSU Cal Coast Open Air Theatre

  • 9/26/22, Weird Al at Balboa Theater

New music:

Lettuce’s Unify. This is one tasty treat on so many levels.

San Diego Symphony’s 2022 recording (under our conductor Payare) of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905”).

And I’m just getting into Mariah Carey’s Emancipation of Mimi. Per her book (below) I’m interested to see how she breaks away from her big label chains.

I also listened to a fair amount of Kenny Loggins through June.

Books:

Mariah Carey’s The Meaning of Mariah Carey, read by Mariah. I could listen to how people create and produce music all day, every day.

Kenny Loggins’ Still Alright: A Memoir, read by Loggins. Same as above: I loved hearing him discuss all the music he has written and produced over the years.

Bob Spitz’s The Beatles: The Biography. I enjoyed Spitz’s recent Zeppelin book, and this Beatles book was also solid.

Decoding your Dog and Decoding your Cat. First, I never thought in a million years (either human, cat, or dog years) I would listen to a book about cats. Well, I have proven myself wrong. These books by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists were fascinating. They are must-reads IMO for anyone that has animals or is considering adding an animal to your life (hopefully by adoption).
